Statement of the Executive Body of the Republican Party of Armenia
Statement of the Executive Body of the Republican Party of Armenia
- Guided by the principles of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, which guarantee the freedom of speech, assembly, and opinion, including the expression of political views,
- Reaffirming the inalienable right of the Armenian people to have a government that respects the principles of the rule of law and upholds the international obligations undertaken to guarantee human rights,
- Concerned about the illegal and systemic nature of the current regime’s actions aimed at destroying democratic institutions and suppressing the opposition in every possible way,
- Noting that the principle “everything is allowed to the regime,” while “nothing is allowed to the opposition,” is becoming entrenched in political life, and is manifested even in the most improper actions by government representatives who violate public morality and norms in the most shameless way.
The Republican Party of Armenia:
- Unambiguously declares that the recent arrests of journalists Narek Samsonyan, Vazgen Saghatelyan, and Davit Fidanian are clear acts of political persecution, and that their detention based on obviously false charges places them among the growing number of political prisoners in Armenia.
- Unconditionally condemns the repressive actions directed against the news website “Antifake.am,” considering it an act aimed at the destruction of opposition platforms and a blatant manifestation of violence against the free press.
- Affirms that these events are not mere accidental occurrences but are direct expressions of long-standing authoritarian tendencies in the country, which confirm the regime’s intention to rule through fear and pressure.
- Demands the immediate release of all political prisoners, including Narek Samsonyan, Vazgen Saghatelyan, Davit Fidanian, and all those imprisoned on political grounds.
- Urges the international community, in particular the European Union, the Council of Europe, and all relevant bodies involved in the protection of human rights, to end their shameful silence and their adherence to double standards.
We call on them to:
- Officially recognize the mentioned individuals as political prisoners.
- Publicly condemn the Armenian authorities for systematic violations of fundamental freedoms.
- Apply effective, including targeted sanctions, against those officials and judges involved in these pressures.
The Republican Party reaffirms its full commitment to the cause of restoring democracy and to the constitutional fight to hold this regime accountable for the crimes committed against the Armenian people and the Armenian state.
